Bail for alleged robber

A WARRNAMBOOL man charged with a robbery in Melbourne has been released on bail after three weeks in custody.

Ian Cooper, 30, now of Glenroy,successfully applied for bail in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court and will be back in court on August 22.

He is facing charges including robberyat Northcote and theft, making threats to kill,breaching anintervention order and committing offence while on bailinWarrnambool.

Mr Cooper hadbeenin custody forthree weeks and previously was refused bail as he hadnowhere to live.

Now hehas housing available at Glenroy where there is mental health and drug and alcohol treatment availablewhich havebeen primary factors in hisoffending.

The robbery at a convenience store was explained as amisunderstanding.

Mr Cooper said he thought he wascalled a dog by anattendant when the attendant was actuallyasking if he wanted food for his dog.

Mr Cooper and a co-accused then took food valued at $30 and they were arrested at the store by police.

Magistrate John Lesser granted bail with strict conditions, saying the penalty for thelevel of offending was likely to be close to the time Mr Cooper had already served in custody.

He said Mr Cooper’s circumstances were now changed and it was hoped he could starttreatment and rehabilitation.
