Emergency services were called toShellharbour Road about 4.20am on Saturday to reports a car had slammed into a wooden pole near Woodford Avenue.

It is believed the 18-year-old male driver from Oak Flats struck the pole about 60km/h. The impact caused the pole to snap and crash into afront yard.

Emergency services are investigating whether hefell asleep at the wheel before the accident.

Ambulance NSW Illawarra district officer InspectorTerry Morrow said the mansuffered a small laceration to the head and complained of pelvic and abdominal pain.

He was given precautionary treatmentat the scene for spinal injuriesand a potential fractured pelvis, before being takento Wollongong Hospital.

Two southbound lanes on Shellharbour Road were closed near Woodford Avenue to carry out repairs on a power pole.

More than 1600 residents were without power after the accident, includingWarilla McDonald’s which lost a day’s trade due to the outage.

Arefrigerated truck was parked in the restaurant’scar park to keep perishablescold.

An Endeavour Energy spokesperson said about 1621 customers were affected.

A section of Shellharbour Road was closed and five sets of traffic lights were blacked out for much of Saturday.Southbound diversions were in place via Veronica Street, Beverley Street, George Street to return to Shellharbour Road.

Power was restored to the last of the affected customers by about 3.15pm and traffic conditions were reported to have returned to normal, including all southbound lanes on Shellharbour Road beingreopened.
