The show in March announced a tradition-breaking change of dates in hopes of stemming declining attendance numbers.

NSW Premier Mike Baird’sshocking decision to ban greyhound racing across the state by July 2017 has sparked concerns of a “financialdisaster”for the Wagga Show.

President of WSS Bruce RyantoldThe Daily Advertiserthe organisation were still coming to terms with the announcementand “had no comment to make.”

It comes after the Wagga Greyhound Club announced a $230,000 track renovation at Wagga Showground, just one fortnight ago.

Avid punter and supporter of greyhound racing Shaun Parkerfears the ban will come as a huge blow to all regional showgrounds.

“It’s a brave and fair decision, especially given the animal cruelty investigations –but I don’t think people have realised the impact it will have on tight-knit communities,” he said.

“If you have something like the Wagga Show, with a passionate greyhound following that’s suddenly cut off, it can spell disaster for them.”

Meanwhile, local member Daryl Maguire has stood by thedecision to bring an end to the industry in NSW.

He acknowledged that the Wagga Show, among other people and groups, may be affected by the decision.

“It will no doubt affect a lot of people in different ways and that is a consequence we’lldeal with,” he said.

The Wagga MP threw his support strongly behind Mike Baird’s bombshell announcement, condemning the animal cruelty thatwas taking place.

“Cabinet made the decision and while there’s a differing of opinions among political groups, it had to be dealt with,” he said.

“No reasonable Australian would acceptanimals beingtied to a lure and screaming while they’re torn to shreds.”

Riverina incumbent Michael McCormack on the other hand took to social media to critique the decision.
