Cr Archer said it was important to have a plan in place to prevent situations such as the the transfer of Caterpillar mining equipment manufacture in Burnie, which left 280 workers unemployed.

The plan comes after a 2015investment prospectus project implemented by the state government and the Bell Bay Economic Development Group, designed to encouragethe expansion of theBell Bay Industrial Precinct.

She said the group hadmorphed into the industry-ledGeorge Town Economic Steering Committee, headed by Bell Bay Aluminium general managerRay Mostogl.

It is believed this group will look at ways to revitalise businesses in the town, in addition to bringing new business to the Bell Bay Industrial Precinct.

“I don’t think it’s imminent (closure of Bell Bay), it’s inevitably going to have a lifespan, whether that’s 10, 15, 20 years at some point it’s probably inevitable,” Cr Archer said.

“George Town’s been fairly reliant on Bell Bay Aluminium and TEMCO as well for employment and it’s pretty important in the local economy.”

George Town Council general manager John Martin said the group was still in its planning phase, and a meeting was held on Friday about forming the industry-led organisation.

He said the Office of the Coordinator-General and the George Town Council had opened tenders for consultancy services on a development strategy/structure plan for the Bell Bay Industrial Precinct.

A 2015 report by theOffice of the Coordinator–Generalargued the landwas well-positioned and serviced due to itsclose proximity to main transport systems, andappropriately zoned at competitive prices.

A spokesperson for the Office of theCoordinator-General said theBell Bay Industrial precinct prospectus had been discussed with potential investorsfrom Canada, the UK and China.

They added there were interestsin a range of industries such as advanced manufacturing, minerals processing and food and beverage production.

Cr Martin said part of the plan was about diversifying industry.

Bell Bay Aluminium declined to comment.
