Kate, 24, was part of a team which produced theL’Occitane sponsoredMain Avenue show garden, designed by James Basson of Monaco, which won gold in thelargest show garden category.

Katewon a scholarship from the Australian Institute of Horticulture and Big Brother Movement Youth Support in 2013 andtraveled to the UK, Europe and Singapore to learn from industry experts, including Mr Basson.

Last year, she was part of Mr Basson’sgold medal winning teamwhich produced the garden“Perfumer’s Garden in Grasse.”

For Kate, the experience was again as rewarding as the prize at the end.

“The experience of volunteering on a Chelsea show garden is energetic and exciting!” she said.

“There are so many moments in which to learn, and with such diverse people from around the world to gain knowledge from, it was incredible!

“As you analyse a Chelsea show garden, strip away the glamour and listen for the deeper stories of the relationships that are being told.”

She again relished working with Mr Basson.

“James has an amazing way to appreciate plants for their totally natural form, this appreciation has rubbed off onto me too!,” she said.

“I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to learn hands on from such an amazing group of people.

To say she is passionate about plants and gardens is to put it lightly.

“I love the relationships that plants have with us, and how they can continue to strive in the most harsh conditions and adapt and flourish to this,” she said.

“The flowers are a bonus, and I love the way they can simply make you smile.”

The Basson team and its garden had genuinely a international flavour.

“James put together a worldly team for this years show, all wanting to help create a garden from the region of Provence, in the South of France,” Kate said.

“We came from New Zealand, Scotland, France, Italy. Also America, Barbados and Spain. Not to forget myself from Australia and the locals from England!”
