Souths went into the contest on the back of three consecutive wins which had elevated them into the top five –where they need to be at the end of the regular home and away series to take part in the finals.

But by losing on Saturday, the Parkes side which has two games in hand drew level with Souths on competition points.

Though the two blues can still make the finals, they are now under extreme pressure to win all their remaining games.

“Games are going to have to go our way now for us to make it,” Souths coach Adrian Cox said.“We had our chances today, even in the first half we had a lot of chances and they had one shot on goal and scored.

“That’s what it comes down to, taking your chances when they are there, and we just didn’t do that.”

As Cox stated, missed opportunities hurt his side on Saturday. They had eight penalty corners for the match, yet their only goal came from open play.

It was Daisy Morrisey who scored in the 40thminute when she deflected a Sarah Watterson salvo into the net.

Parkes’ goals came from Bec Cowling (29thminute)and Syann Allen (37th).
