The sad realitythis winter is that many Northern Tasmanians will either have to chose between one or the other as the cold takes hold and the bills pile up.

And some will face the prospect of going without both.

Emergency reliefproviders say that more and more people are regularly seeking their support for high power bills.

Many arepresenting overdue energy bills in the thousands of dollars.

TasCOSS chief executive Kym Goodes said charities are seeing an increase of people they class as the working poor pleading for assistance.

These families have not had to rely on emergency relief until now.

Ms Goodes attributedthe emergence of this trend to the fact that wages hadfailed to keep pace with the incremental rising costs of living over the years.

To their credit, Aurora do their best to avoid switching a family’s power off.

They claim to offer flexiblepayment plans, loan programs and power efficiency education.

But these steps could not stop the disconnection of 324 residents in the first three months of this year.

According to the Tasmanian Energy Regulator,2376 customers were on a payment plan in2014-15;a drop of 580 customers from the previous financial year.

There were4229 customersstill repaying debt over that financial year;a drop of1716 from the 2013-14.

Of those lumbered with a power bill debt in 2014-15, 218 customers had debt of more than $2500 and 305 customers had a debt of between $1500 and $2500.

These stressful debts are not easily wiped as low-income families deal with other bill pressures and living costs.

Aurora Energy has partnered with No Interest Loans Network of Tasmania this financial yearto provide the Energy Saver Loan and Subsidy program to support low income Tasmanians.

Under the program, a 50 per cent subsidy is applied to the purchase of energy efficient items with the remainder funded through a no interest loan ofup to $3000.

Thankfully, it is theTasmanian charities that are available to provide immediatehelp at the coalfacewith paying theburdensome bills of many this winter to ensure that theirlights and the heaters are kept on.
