SUCCESS: Beechford runner Getasew Ferguson picked up two medals at the Oceania Melanesian Regional Championships this weekend.TASMANIAhas picked five medals at the 2016Melanesian Athletics Championships in Fiji.Beechford runner GetasewFergusonbecame a multiple medal winner after twodays at the international meet in Suva.

The 17-year-old, who has been suffering from blood constriction in his armsfor almost three years,won silver in the men’sunder-183000 metres,clocking 8 minutes and59.08 seconds on Thursday.

Fergusonbacked up his second-place effort 24-hours later with a bronze in the men’s under-18800m.

He finished in1:58.53.

Fellow Tasmanian Jane Hickietook out silver in the under-18long jump with a 5.30m leap before pinching third spot in the open 100m hurdles.The Eastern Suburbs athlete crossed the line in14.99.On day two, Sandy Bay Harriers star Ruby Smee cruised to victoryin the under-18 3000m.

She finished in10:12.93 to defeat Australian rival Shania Murray (10:30.43).

Southern Saints runnerDusty Rankin secured silver in the under-18400m with a time of51.30 behindPapua New Guinea’s Wanga Emmanuel (50.66).The three-daychampionships ran from July 7 to 9. The third day was in progress overnight.
